Help us to put together an exhibition on the Niger Delta environment!

#FUELFORTHOUGHT

We are fundraising for our Ma exhibition show focusing on the niger delta environment

Who are WE?

We are a group of MA Curatorial Studies students in the School of Philosophy and Art History at the University of Essex. We are organising an exhibition from the 2nd May until the 1st June 2019 at Art Exchange Gallery.

WHAT IS FUEL FOR THOUGHT

Fuel for Thought is an exhibition that focuses on the environment as a silent participant in the extractive oil industry that is active in the Niger Delta region in Nigeria. Climate Change is an international issue in our contemporary world, by focusing on one specific geographic location - we can highlight other issues that are occurring around the world too.

WHAT IS OUR EXHIBITION ABOUT?

The aim of our exhibition is to show how Nigerian artists are seeing, conceiving and responding to the issues around Niger Delta. We will endeavour to explore how they use art as a vehicle to inform, educate and raise awareness of the environmental, social, political and cultural situation of the region and the impact on people who live there.

Furthermore, we want to create an exhibition that is relevant to both students and staff on campus and the local community, but also feature artists that truly connect with our theme. We are organising events and activities like workshops, a film screening, artist performances and a school outreach program related to climate change. Since the university has such a diverse community, we will be engaging with different departments and societies with the exhibition and the events.

We are very passionate about our exhibition. We have been working very hard on our project since October and after several brainstorming sessions, we understand that climate change is a real concern and something that needs more awareness in our small area of the world. The awareness that we will hopefully raise around this issue will highlight the artistic responses to global issues and socio-political implications.

Where will the money go?

We have been given a budget, but it is not enough to cover all our costs. In order to create the best exhibition possible, we really need to raise extra funds.

Any funds we raise will be used for the transportation of the artworks, publication fees, as well as event costs related to the exhibition.

Reaching our minimum goal will allow us to;

  • Transport the artworks - £600
  • Publications, i.e. posters, the catalogue, postcards, etc - £300

Reaching our total goal will allow us to;

  • Do all of the above with the £900 we raise from this, plus
  • Events around the exhibition, this will include the costs to cover speakers for a conference/panel event/Q&A events, a film screening and school workshops - £800
  • An outside installation around the university campus - £300
