A bit about me

My name is Kelsi Diljohn and I am a first year, undergraduate, Law and French student at the University of Essex. I am from the multicultural and diverse, twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, and came to the University of Essex mainly because of their commitment to a global outlook on education. The degree that I chose will allow me to study abroad in France for my third year, further enhancing my goal of becoming a global citizen. Currently, I am crowdfunding to take part in a Law and Human Rights internship in Tanzania. This six week project entails three weeks each in Arusha and then Dar es Salaam.

In today's society, I believe that it is increasingly essential to ensure that basic human rights are afforded to all. Since this internship deals mainly with human rights issues in Arusha and Dar es Salaam, I will be able to take part in the solution to this global problem. Myself along with ten other like minded students will be working with a human rights lawyer for three days a week at a local firm; Access Attorneys. I will be assisting with writing reports, research, visiting clients, as well as local education projects on human rights. Tanzania is a country where basic human rights are infringed upon daily. For example, one of the main problems that caught my attention is that child marriage is not totally banned, and it is general knowledge that a society cannot move forward when its children are in harm's way. Furthermore, there is a lack of freedom of speech which makes advocating for rights even harder than it already is in a developing country.

For the remainder of the time, I will be volunteering with youths in the community and also taking part  in local conservation and restoration projects. This will involve volunteering to help teach in schools where there are currently extremely low literacy rates, construction projects of houses and schools, as well as volunteering in animal reserves.

Being one of the few, successful applicants chosen to partake in this internship, has already truly been an amazing accomplishment. Making a difference has always been my goal, and what better way to achieve this than to get my foot in the door with an amazing opportunity such as this one.

Where will the money go?

The total expense of this trip is around £2800.

MINIMUM TARGET (£2000):
