Helping us, help others

A short summary of your project

I am raising money to fund training to become a mental health trainer. I want to do this, as I believe the impact for me will be awesome. By donating you are not only helping me achieve my goal but as a result, help many people that I will train in the future. By training multiple people, it not only raise awareness of mental health, but gives people the knowledge to provide solutions to others and helps eradicate stigma! Consequently, I want to raise this money to be able to successfully complete the training and further do my bit to raise awareness of the importance of looking after your mental health and stamp out stigma.

Who are you?

My name is Juanita Agboola, I am the Founder of Half Full Not Empty - a social enterprise that encourages and equips young people to take a proactive, rather than reactive approach to their mental health. Alongside my wonderful team, I have facilitated workshops and held events to do with spreading awareness and the importance of looking after your mental health.

Information about Half Full Not Empty

Half Full Not Empty (HFNE) started two years ago; when I was feeling down and out - have you ever felt a bit rubbish, and thought to yourself 'I can't be the only one that feels like this?' That is exactly how I felt. I started a social media campaign to raise awareness of mental health and build a community with others so that we could remind each other we weren't in this alone. Since then the concept has grown and developed and our ethos is 'mental health in a feel-good way'. It is important to acknowledge the fact that mental health is not synonymous with sadness. Everyone has a mental health, and the state of one's mental health is dependent on ones ability to cope; which means someone can definitely have a great mental health.

Since starting HFNE we have built an enthusiastic online community, held events and workshops in secondary schools, universities and Google offices about different topics surrounding mental health and the importance of having a proactive approach to mental health.

The growth of HFNE is incredibly important to me because when I was younger I struggled with my mind and self-esteem, so if I can just help one person not feel this way that would be amazing! Moreover, statistics show that mental health issues are increasing both in young people and adults all around the world. According to mfaengland.org, for those aged 5 -19 suicide is the second most common cause of death, and a record number of children contacted Childline with suicidal thoughts in 2016/17. Therefore, it is very important to start the education of how to look after your mental health from an early age, just like how we are taught from a young age to exercise and eat 5 fruit/vegetables a day!

The mental health trainer course

I am already a trained mental health first aider; therefore, I know firsthand that this course has given me more confident to speak on mental health, be able to spot symptoms of distress in others and be able to provide solutions to others in need. I want to be a qualified mental health trainer because I know that the result in more people trained in mental health first aid would be great for transforming the perception of mental health in society.

Essentially, by donating as much or as little as you can afford (all is greatly appreciated) you are not only helping me achieve my goal but helping hundreds of thousands of others - both, those I train but also those that are helped by the ones I train.

Where will the money go?

All the money raised will go on funding the training course. The course is £2790. I am raising £2020 on this platform and the remaining £770 will be funded through a successful pitching opportunity.

The course includes:

  • Seven days training
  • All training materials
  • Access to instructor dashboard area of our website
  • One year of mentor support
