The only elite basketball club in Essex.

Who we are:

We are Essex Rebels basketball club, men’s first team. Recently, our men’s team has been promoted to division 1 of the national basketball league which is the second highest tier for men’s basketball in the UK. Additionally, we are proud to represent the university at the highest levels of British Basketball and hope to progress even further in the future. Due to the current economic climate we are unable to secure key sponsorship deals that we have relied on in past seasons.

We are looking to raise funds to support our elite athletes and the ongoing development of the club. Our goal is to raise £3,445 to fund referees and table officials for our home games and we would really appreciate any donations you can support us with. We need this money by the 20th of October 2020, or we will be unable to afford home games, ultimately resulting in forfeiting those fixtures.

Our Story:

As an organisation, Essex Rebels is a new brand and have accomplished a lot within a short period of time. The men’s team has had a quick rise through the leagues, beginning the journey back in division 4 to now competing in division 1 after winning division 2 South last season.

Basketball is the second most popular participation sport amongst young people in the U.K. and its popularity has grown rapidly in recent years at the University. Our National League matches attract crowds of up to 700 spectators, who are a mix of students, staff and young families from the local area. As well as the National League teams, there are now 3 men’s teams competing within BUCS, and a large internal league at the university in which over 100 students compete each week. Additionally, a school’s outreach program sees players from the senior teams visiting local primary and secondary schools weekly, and our newly formed junior club and academy has around 100 boys and girls aged 12 to 18 visiting the University to take part every week.

All players are determined to reach their full potential, and by the time the new season begins we will be ready to challenge for silverware.

Where will the money go?

Your kind donations will be put towards officiating costs that come with playing at this level. The costs are approximately £265 per home fixture. We require three level 3 referees, who command £30 a game each (plus travel expenses, which we estimate to be around £75 per game). We need three highly qualified table officials and two statisticians, all of whom are paid £20 per game.

The overall cost for officials for the 2020/21 season will be £3,445. This would allow us to fund all 13 of our home league fixtures for the upcoming season. If  we are lucky enough to receive any additional donations above our ideal target, it will be used to pay officials for extra cup games that we will be hosting.
