We are raising funds to make basketball and volleyball accessible to schools in the local community.

Who are the Essex Rebels? 

The Essex Rebels, established in 2018, are the only professional men and women basketball teams in Essex. In the last 5 years, the men's and women's teams have grown from strength to strength. Both teams compete at the top level in the UK, and now provide a comprehensive pathway for players all the way from school-age to professional and even international level. Since 2022, the Essex Rebels have expanded to include volleyball as past of their sporting family, further broadening our positive impact across multiple sports. We are very fortunate to have professional student-athletes who are passionate about making a meaningful impact in the community by serving as role models and visiting schools to inspire the next generation.

The Rebels Reach Programme 2025

Rebels Reach is all about reaching into disadvantaged communities in Colchester and wider Essex, giving children the opportunity to play basketball and volleyball. The project leans on the unique attributes and culture that characterises these sports, deploying them through participation-led outreach in schools to positively change young peoples lives and raise their aspirations. 

Studies show that participation in team sports have significant benefits on children's academic performance, self-confidence,

mental health, and lifelong habits of physical activity. Unfortunately, in many areas of Essex, children from disadvantaged backgrounds have no access to physical activity opportunities.  

What your support provides:

• 12 hours of after-school coaching (basketball and/or volleyball) to local schools, delivered by our very own Essex Rebels student-athletes.
• Free tickets to a Rebels game for school pupils 
• End-of-programme tournament at Essex Sport Arena (transportation covered)

Beyond the Court: Our Community Impact

The Essex Rebels are already making a difference through:

• Rebels Roadshows: Essex Rebels deliver assemblies and taster sessions in schools 
• After-School Clubs: Weekly sessions in schools delivered by our very own Essex Rebels.
• Her World, Her Rules: Essex Rebels hosted a FIBA-supported initiative to promote girls' basketball.
• Pre-game volleyball clinics: We hosted free volleyball clinics for children prior to Rebels home games.
